The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting is underway in New Delhi with India calling for stronger multilateral cooperation, dialogue and diplomacy amid growing global challenges.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is chairing the meeting, which brings together foreign ministers and heads of delegation from BRICS member and partner countries. The discussions are focused on global and regional issues of common interest.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also interacted with the participating foreign ministers and heads of delegation in New Delhi. He said that BRICS, under India’s chairmanship in 2026, will work to strengthen multilateralism and promote sustainable development.
India Highlights Dialogue and Diplomacy
Speaking at the opening session, Jaishankar said that peace and security remain central to the global order. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy at a time when conflicts and geopolitical tensions continue to affect several regions. According to the News On AIR report, he said recent conflicts have further highlighted the need for countries to engage through diplomatic channels. The meeting provides BRICS members with an opportunity to discuss issues that affect both emerging economies and the wider international community.
India has placed four key areas at the centre of its BRICS chairship: resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. These priorities are also reflected in the theme of the foreign ministers’ meeting.
PM Modi Calls BRICS an Important Platform
Prime Minister Modi described BRICS as an important platform for cooperation among emerging economies. He said the grouping provides a forum for developing countries to raise their concerns and give greater voice to the aspirations of the Global South. Under India’s chairmanship, New Delhi has said it wants BRICS to focus on practical cooperation while strengthening the role of developing and emerging economies in global affairs. The focus on multilateralism also comes as countries face challenges linked to conflicts, economic uncertainty, climate concerns and changes in global trade.
Major Foreign Ministers Attend New Delhi Meeting
The New Delhi meeting is being attended by several prominent foreign ministers, including Brazil’s Mauro Vieira, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and Iran’s Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Their participation adds to the importance of discussions on international and regional developments.
For India, the meeting is also an opportunity to build consensus among BRICS members and strengthen cooperation on issues of shared interest.
BRICS has expanded significantly in recent years, increasing its role as a platform for emerging and developing economies. However, its members have different economic interests and foreign policy priorities. As a result, reaching common positions on complex international issues can be challenging. India’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy is aimed at keeping cooperation at the centre of the grouping’s discussions.
The New Delhi meeting is expected to contribute to preparations for further BRICS level discussions during India’s 2026 chairship.
