Captain Smit Machchhar was praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot during a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight, helping prevent a major tragedy.
Indian Pilot Praised After Flydubai Emergency
Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being praised internationally after a dramatic emergency on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Machchhar for his bravery after the pilot was reportedly stabbed by his co-pilot during the flight.
The aircraft, Flydubai flight FZ1073, was carrying 174 people when the emergency unfolded on September 30. The flight was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia after transmitting emergency signals. All passengers were eventually reported safe and accounted for.
According to Netanyahu, Machchhar continued to act despite being seriously injured. He managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help overpower the attacker.
How Captain Machchhar Helped Prevent A Disaster
The incident began while the aircraft was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft experienced a sharp descent of more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before emergency signals were transmitted.
According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Machchhar and attempted to take control of the aircraft. However, the exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation, and Flydubai has cautioned against premature speculation.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar was able to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew then entered the cockpit and helped restrain the co-pilot. Two other Flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft also assisted in bringing the plane to safety.
The aircraft eventually landed at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. A rescue Flydubai flight later transported the passengers to their intended destination in Israel.
Netanyahu And Modi Salute The Indian Pilot
Netanyahu publicly praised Machchhar for what he described as extraordinary bravery. He said the Indian pilot’s actions helped prevent a catastrophic mid-air disaster and saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar, calling him a hero and saying his courage helped avert a major tragedy. The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk and was reported to be in stable condition.
The recognition has brought global attention to the Indian pilot and the actions of the passengers and crew who responded during the emergency.
Investigation Underway Into Flydubai Incident
While the aircraft landed safely, questions remain about what triggered the cockpit confrontation. The co-pilot was arrested after the plane landed in Saudi Arabia, according to Netanyahu. An Israeli official identified him as an Omani national, although his nationality and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently confirmed.
Flydubai has said that an incident occurred on the flight and that the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk. The airline confirmed that all passengers were safe and accounted for.
The investigation will now focus on the sequence of events inside the cockpit, the motive behind the alleged attack and how the emergency unfolded.
For now, Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions have become the central focus of the incident. His ability to respond despite suffering serious injuries, along with the intervention of passengers and crew, helped bring the aircraft safely to the ground and prevented what could have been a far more serious disaster.
