A 19-year-old man in Illinois has been arrested for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, near Chicago. Police say the suspect, Alexandros Paporakis, had a rifle, ammunition and tactical gear. Investigators also found a document containing white supremacist views and plans for mass violence.
The arrest has raised concerns about the safety of Hindu temples and other religious sites in the United States. Police are now examining the evidence to establish the full extent of the alleged plot.
How Police Uncovered The Alleged Shooting Plot
The investigation began after a person reported receiving disturbing electronic messages from Paporakis. The suspect worked as a cashier at a Taco Bell restaurant in Palatine, Illinois.
Investigators say the messages included a document outlining an alleged mass shooting plan. The document also contained images of a rifle, ammunition magazines, body armour and tactical equipment.
Police also learned that Paporakis had reportedly told his co-workers that Sunday, October 11, would be a “special day”. Investigators then gathered information about a possible attack on a Hindu place of worship in Aurora.
Palatine and Mount Prospect police worked together to investigate the threat. Officers arrested Paporakis as he left his residence on October 11.
Police Find Rifle, Ammunition And Manifesto
During a search of the suspect’s residence, investigators found a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment.
Police also recovered a tactical vest with body armour. The vest carried a patch with imagery linked to white supremacist extremism.
Investigators examined the suspect’s electronic communications and a document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)”.
According to police, the document contained extremist views and references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.
Authorities continue to examine the evidence to understand the suspect’s alleged intentions and whether others knew about the plan.
Suspect Faces Criminal Charges
Paporakis faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a weapon. The weapons charge relates to a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.
He appeared before a court in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, on October 14. The judge ordered him to remain in custody. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 30.
The Palatine Police Department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on the case. Investigators are reviewing the evidence and assessing whether they should file additional charges.
Police also contacted authorities in Aurora. Officials reached out to Hindu places of worship to inform them about the potential threat.
Hindu Group Urges Community To Stay Alert
The Hindu American Foundation praised law enforcement for its response and urged community members to stay alert. The organisation also encouraged people to report suspicious activity and potential threats.
The case has renewed concerns about the safety of Hindu temples and other religious institutions in the United States. It has also drawn attention to the risks posed by extremist views and racially motivated violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the alleged plot. They have yet to establish all the details surrounding the intended attack.
