The West Bengal government plans to develop Mayapur in Nadia district into an international-standard religious and tourist destination. The proposed project will focus on infrastructure, visitor facilities and better civic services around the ISKCON temple.
Mayapur to get major infrastructure upgrade
The state government is planning a large-scale development project around the headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Mayapur. According to the Urban Development Department, the project will cover around 2,100 bighas of land near the ISKCON temple.
The plan aims to improve Mayapur’s infrastructure while making the town more accessible and comfortable for pilgrims and tourists. The proposed development will include better roads, public transport, waste management and lighting.
Modern facilities for visitors will also form a key part of the project. The government wants to upgrade basic civic services while preserving Mayapur’s importance as a major religious destination.
Agnimitra Paul discusses development plan
Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul recently visited the ISKCON temple in Mayapur. She held a meeting with government officials and representatives of ISKCON to discuss the proposed development plan.
The government’s plan comes as Mayapur continues to attract pilgrims and tourists from India and abroad. The town is known as the headquarters of ISKCON and has major significance for followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.
The proposed infrastructure work is expected to focus on improving the overall experience for visitors. Better connectivity and public amenities are central to the development plan.
Nabadwip also part of wider development plan
The state government is also looking at the development of nearby Nabadwip. According to the Urban Development Department, Nabadwip is planned for development under the Smart City project.
The move is part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure in the region. With Mayapur and Nabadwip located close to each other, better connectivity and civic facilities could support religious tourism in the area.
West Bengal’s tourism plans have also placed emphasis on strengthening religious and cultural destinations across the state. Mayapur is already a major pilgrimage centre, with the state tourism department describing it as a significant destination for devotees from across the world.
Focus on pilgrims and tourists
The proposed Mayapur development will combine religious tourism with modern infrastructure. The government plans to improve roads, transport, waste management, lighting and other facilities used by visitors.
Mayapur is located near the confluence of the Ganges and Jalangi rivers in Nadia district. It is closely associated with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and is home to the ISKCON headquarters.
With the proposed upgrade, the West Bengal government aims to give Mayapur an international-standard identity as a religious and tourist destination while improving facilities for the large number of pilgrims and visitors who travel to the town.
