Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the first international cargo voyage from Dibrugarh, Assam, on Monday, October 5, marking a significant development in the revival of the region’s river trade.
The maiden cargo voyage will depart from the Bogibeel Terminal in Dibrugarh and carry methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APCL) to Pangaon Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The vessel will travel through National Waterway-2 along the Brahmaputra before entering the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route.
First Foreign Cargo Movement From Dibrugarh Since Independence
The voyage is significant as it marks the first time since Independence that a cargo consignment from Dibrugarh is being transported to a foreign port.
Dibrugarh and the Brahmaputra historically played an important role in connecting Upper Assam with markets beyond the region. The latest initiative seeks to revive that river-based trade connectivity and strengthen Assam’s links with Bangladesh and other markets.
Methanol To Be Transported To Dhaka
The cargo consists of methanol manufactured by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited. It will be transported from Bogibeel to Pangaon Port in Dhaka through the Brahmaputra and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route.
The movement is also aimed at promoting inland waterways as an alternative mode of cargo transportation for the Northeast, with the government highlighting their potential as a cost-effective and environmentally efficient transport option.
Himanta Biswa Sarma To Join Virtually
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to join the flag-off ceremony virtually. The event at Bogibeel Terminal is being organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Inland Waterways Authority of India, the Assam government and Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited.
The resumption of international cargo movement from Dibrugarh through the Brahmaputra is being seen as an important step towards strengthening inland waterway connectivity and regional trade.
