The billionaire has donated more than $276 million since July to support Republican candidates. The spending marks a reversal of his earlier pledge to scale back political contributions.
Elon Musk has emerged as the biggest known donor in the 2026 US midterm elections. He has contributed more than $276 million since July to help Republicans retain their majorities in Congress. The spending comes as the party faces voter discontent over President Donald Trump’s performance, rising prices and the war with Iran.
The figures were first reported by The New York Times ahead of a federal campaign finance filing deadline. Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for Musk’s super PAC, confirmed the numbers, according to the report published by NDTV and the Associated Press.
Musk Gives $158 Million to Republican Senate Campaigns
A significant share of Musk’s political contributions has gone to groups supporting Republican candidates.
He donated $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a major super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates. The contribution ranks among the largest known political donations in American history, according to The New York Times.
Musk also directed $76 million to America PAC, his own political action committee. The organisation is building a voter outreach operation similar to the campaign that helped Trump win the 2024 presidential election.
Another $10 million went to Lone Star Liberty PAC. The group supports Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee in the Texas Senate race.
The spending highlights Musk’s efforts to help Republicans defend their congressional seats as the midterm elections approach.
Political Spending Reverses Musk’s Earlier Pledge
Musk’s latest contributions mark a shift from his position last May. At the time, he indicated that he planned to reduce his political spending.
“I think I’ve done enough,” he said.
Despite the renewed financial commitment, Musk has maintained a lower public profile than during the 2024 election campaign. He previously appeared alongside Trump at rallies and later led the Department of Government Efficiency during the president’s second term.
Musk and Trump also experienced a public falling-out after Musk left his government role. The two have since reconciled. Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science last week.
Republicans Face Voter Discontent Despite Funding Advantage
The Republican Party has gained a significant financial advantage over its Democratic rivals. However, the party faces political challenges ahead of the midterms.
Voter frustration over Trump’s performance, persistent high prices and the war with Iran has created uncertainty for Republican candidates. The party is using its financial resources to increase advertising and reach voters during the final stretch of campaigning.
Romeo defended the spending, saying the investments would help Republicans communicate their message and remain competitive.
Democrats, however, accused Republicans of relying on large financial contributions to overcome weaknesses among their candidates and the administration.
Lauren French, a spokesperson for the Democrats’ Senate Majority PAC, argued that Republicans were attempting to use campaign spending to offset public dissatisfaction with their candidates, the president and the economy.
Musk’s Wealth and Political Influence Under Scrutiny
Musk’s political contributions come as his personal fortune continues to fluctuate with market valuations. According to Forbes, his net worth crossed the $1 trillion mark again last week.
His latest donations underline the growing role of wealthy individuals and political action committees in US election campaigns. The scale of the spending also places renewed focus on the financial resources available to candidates competing for control of Congress.
With Republicans seeking to retain their majorities, Musk’s financial backing could provide a substantial boost to their campaign efforts. However, the outcome will ultimately depend on voters and the political issues shaping the midterm
