Apple’s first foldable iPhone has drawn complaints from customers reporting cracked inner displays, unusual hinge sounds and screen malfunctions. The company has acknowledged an issue affecting a small number of devices and advised customers to contact AppleCare for replacements.
Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is facing early complaints after several customers reported cracks appearing on its inner display within hours or days of purchase. Some users have also reported hearing a crunching sound while unfolding the device, raising questions about the durability of the phone’s folding mechanism.
According to a Bloomberg report published by NDTV, the complaints first surfaced on Reddit and other social media platforms. Bloomberg independently verified reports from more than half a dozen customers who shared photographs of damaged devices and records of their conversations with Apple’s customer support teams.
Apple Acknowledges iPhone Duo Display Problem
Apple has acknowledged that some iPhone Duo units are experiencing problems with their inner displays.
The company said it was aware of an issue affecting a small number of devices and advised customers experiencing display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Apple has maintained that most iPhone Duo units are not affected. According to the company, the defect appears quickly in the devices that experience the problem.
The complaints come shortly after the phone went on sale on Friday, October 23, making the issue an early challenge for Apple’s first foldable smartphone.
Users Report Cracks And Unusual Hinge Sounds
Several customers described similar experiences while opening their devices during normal use.
Some reported that the hinge suddenly felt tighter or moved more slowly than usual before lines or cracks appeared on the inner screen. Others noticed white patches, bright lines and display malfunctions after hearing a crunching sound.
Venture capitalist Jonathan King said the inner display of his device became unusable following the incident, although the smaller outer screen continued to work.
Another customer, Vishnu Rajkumar from Chennai, reported unusual resistance while opening his phone. He said the display began showing damage that worsened after repeated folding. Rajkumar subsequently obtained a replacement device through an authorised reseller.
Other affected customers said their phones had not been dropped or subjected to unusual pressure.
Is The iPhone Duo Hinge Responsible?
The precise cause of the display damage has not yet been established.
However, repair platform iFixit suggested that a component within the hinge mechanism could be responsible. According to its assessment, a failing hinge component may be cracking the screen rather than the display panel itself being the original source of the problem.
The reports are particularly significant because Apple spent years developing its foldable design and highlighted the device’s hinge engineering, display technology and durability.
The iPhone Duo features a smaller external screen that opens into a larger inner display, following the foldable smartphone design used by competing manufacturers.
Apple Customers Await Replacement Devices
Some customers have reported difficulties obtaining immediate replacements because nearby Apple stores did not have available stock or customer-support appointments.
Apple has also been investigating affected devices, with reports indicating that its engineers are seeking units for further analysis.
The incident recalls early durability problems faced by other smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold in 2019. Industry analysts have cautioned that it is too early to determine whether the iPhone Duo complaints indicate a widespread defect.
For now, Apple is directing affected customers to AppleCare while the company investigates the issue. The scale of the problem and whether further action will be required remain unclear.
